Camelback Village has been hosting the GCSG since 2004, for 2008 a new format was brought in. The squash tournament was played over 2 week-ends. DC Ranch played host May 30th-June 1st and Camelback June 6-8th. A total if 106 players participated this year, a record entry.

The reason for this was a new format that was played. DC Ranch used an Olympic Draw; this entailed having 2 32 player draws or a maximum of 64 players. The entries for this were all in with a month to spare. These were called A and B, the A event being payers with a rating from 4.5 upwards and the B’s 4.0 Read the rest of this entry »

First alert. Mail from Tina…

Hi all, it’s that time of year again. The Grand Canyon State Summer Squash Games are just around the corner. We will be using an Olympic format this year. with this, you sign up for the division you think you should be in and we’ll take the top 32 players, and the remaining 32 players to create two draws. This format guarantees you a minimum of 3 matches (5 match maximum), and does a better job of helping you find you actual (correct) rating. Sign up early - we’re limited to the first 64 entries. All matches will be best of 5 games to 9 points.

Dates: May 30 - June 1 (matches start at 3:00pm - please note your earliest availability). Held at DC Ranch Village

We will also be holding age groups (40, 50 and 65+, women’s, novice and juniors) June 6 - 8. Held at Camelback Village

Great prizes this year include massages for every division winner, Head prizes, etc. Don’t forget, top three division winners receive their Gold, Silver and Bronze trophies! For more information, reply to this email, or contact Jim Franklin at DC Ranch (jfranklin@dmbclubs.com).

Stefan Myhajlenko - myhajlenko@asu.edu is running a squash league at ASU.

The latest update to the US Squash court survey now has the court at ASU listed properly as a converted racquetball court, not a hardball court. Guess all of you folks who like the skinny courts will have to play down in Tucson ;-)

Thanks to Nelson for the update.

Ocotillo in Chandler Will Have a Village: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance

CHANDLER, Ariz., Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ — With final approval received from DMB Executives, another first class Village Health Club and Spa will be built, this one in Ocotillo; the master-planed community in Chandler, Arizona. As of July 31st, the land at the corner of Alma School and Ocotillo Road has closed Escrow, and a club design has been approved. The purchase of the 7.3 acres in this growing part of the Valley provides the perfect location for a new Village Health Club and Spa.

2 new squash courts up in Chandler. Not bad at all.

In the second Arizona Team Squash Match, the team from Tucson/Sedona won the team trophy again. In a series of hard fought matches between the teams of five players each, Tucson/Sedona won 7 matches, Phoenix Lifetime won 5 matches and Phoenix Village won 3.

In the #1 position, Tom Frenkel (Village) beat Larry Kaye (Tucson) in an exhausting 2-1, over one hour match. Larry then came back to beat Alan Knobloch (Lifetime) 2-0 and Alan beat Tom (2-0).

At #2 Don Sheer (Sedona) dominated both matches 2-0.

The #3 slot was won by OV Singh (Tucson) with 2-0 and 3-0 wins in each of his matches.

At #4, Munawwar Khan (Lifetime) went 2-0 in his matches - the same result by Pete Fisher (Lifetime) at #5.

Overall, a good time was had by all and, unfortunately, Lifetime’s Kaleem Beg was hampered by a back injury and had to withdraw after one match. Hurried substitutes had to be found on short notice.

A rematch is planned for Tucson in December! Special thanks to Alan Knobloch (Lifetime) for organizing the event and captains Jay Gould (Village) and Peter Reinthal (Tucson) for getting the teams together.

Hi Everyone

Just a quick update on the Grand Canyon State Games squash tournament. A great week-end was had by everyone, we had a record 77 entries with players ranging in age from 8 to 84, just shows you are never to old or young to take up squash.

All results can be found at this link http://www.r2sports.com/tourney.asp?TID=2405

A very special thanks has to go to the Village for allowing us the use of their facilities, all their staff especially Terry and Clyde for making sure the court floors and walls got cleaned every day. They actually had somebody come in at *4am *over the week-end to make sure the courts would be ready for the first matches. The Village is in contention to win the GCSG venue of the year award, lets hope they do.

Also to Head our sponsors for providing us with tournament balls, I believe we were the first tournament to use the Head squash ball, and prizes for the winners.

Thank you everyone for making a success of the Grand Canyon State Games.

Jonathan Power vs Jon White exhibition - Power, from Canada, is WORLD former #1 and White, from Scotland, is one of the hardest hitting players ever. The match is FREE (thanks to the now defunct AZSRA) and open to everyone. It will be Saturday May 19th at 5:30 PM at the Gainey Club in north Scottsdale (a fabulous facility). Take advantage of this opportunity to see WORLD CLASS SQUASH in Arizona because it probably will not happen again for a long, long time.
