It is holiday time in most of the world, and for most squash players, so getting out of squash shape or staying in good squash shape is a concern for most committed players – no matter what level they play at.  To help squash coaches understand detraining click this link for a concise summary I am going to go over a real example from my Smith College Squash Team.

TEQUILA DON RAMON SOUTHWEST OPEN SQUASH TOURNAMENT SEPTEMBER 23RD – 26TH TEMPE, AZ

Not long now before a first in Arizona history there will be a full scale women’s professional tour event (WISPA). Complementing this, at the request of the US Squash Women’s Committee, a women’s 3 a-side event will take place as a warm-up to the Howe Cup November 5th-7th, Rye, NY. This will be great preparation for those planning to send teams to NY but it will also give the women of Arizona a chance to see and learn about the benefits of squash and some of the best amateur players in the USA.

Not forgetting the men, they will also have a part in the Tequila Don Ramon Southwest Open Squash with their own divisions of 2.5 to 6.0 level of players. The Tournament will be played at Life Time Fitness, 1616 W Ruby Drive, Tempe, where there are 4 international courts. The Club will also close off one of the two basketball courts thus allowing the squash players more room to stretch, food areas, tournament director’s work station, kids’ bouncy castle and a players’ video booth. Time flies and it will soon be time for the Summer Games, the event will again be held at Life Time Fitness in Tempe June 4th-6th.

This time we will have an Olympic format which means you are guaranteed 3 matches with a maximum of 5. For those of you who remember the format from 2 years ago there will be a slight change Last time we ad 2 groups of 32 n A and a B group, it will be the same again but the last 8 from the A group and the top 8 from the B group will merge into one (potentially meaning 6 matches for that division) Sign up using the rating system and then the top 32 will go into the A division and the next 32 in the B’s. First 64 players only

EXTRA NEWS I have been asked to add a junior novice section so your wishes have been granted, there is an extra division and it is free to juniors

All players who enter before May 1st will go into a prize draw for a gift card to The Cheesecake Factory Attached is the link http://www.r2sports.com/tourney/home.asp?TID=6896

(5) Outreach to the Athletic Club Business. US squash needs to put a focus on putting a face on the squash business and making commercial club owners encouraged to install squash, and comfortable about the decision to install squash. Help those businesses get the word out about their facilities. (see above) encourage all kinds of events that build up competition between clubs and so forth. John Nimick pleaded with the squash adminstrators to focus on this activity, in an open meeting he held with squash "thought leaders" some seven years ago. His pleadings were ignored.

Juniors Championship

From the WSF Annual General Meeting held last week.

Earlier, in one of the most controversial issues handled at an AGM in recent years, the delegates voted overwhelmingly to adopt a new universal ‘Point A Rally’ scoring system for Squash, to 11 points per game – as is currently the case in the professional game for both men and women. The sport’s new official scoring system will come into effect from 1 April 2009.

From Ontario Squash

WHAT IS PAR 11 SCORING?

PAR 11 is played best of five games to 11 points, with points being scored irrespective of which player serves. Where the score reaches ten all, the game will be won by two clear points (which will be expressed as 11-10, irrespective of the actual score, in the way that tennis tie breaks are written as 7-6).

Note that the PSA and WISPA gave up on the 11-10 (x-y) reporting of scores. Too hard. They simply list the actual scores of the game, e.g. 14-12.

The Squash Official for April 2008 And so begins the end – of this season. They say that if people really understood each other, they would never agree. Is mutual misunderstanding the key to our success in demystifying the rules of Squash?

It’s been a while. I haven’t seen a paper copy of the TSO in years. Thought that Barry had “retired”.

A wonderful take on the game of squash with valuable information and some fun as well.

The first weekend of the Grand Canyon State Games is finished.

The media reports are well done. Try some here.

I found the options of “By Division” and “All Tournament Matches” worked well.

Congratulations to all of the participants.

8)

The Board of the Professional Squash Association has decided to revise the reporting of its scoring system with effect from 1 June.

The PSA’s move in August 2004 to reduce of the points in a game from 15 to 11 transformed men’s professional squash – making the sport more attacking, more exciting, and considerably enhancing its spectator and television appeal. Read the rest of this entry »

Science of Coaching Squash

Squash is one of the most “open” sports, a sport in which players must effectively read, react, and make decisions in a constantly changing environment. Why then do most coaches run “closed” training sessions where no decisions are necessary?

See how ready my racquet is? I actually saw this picture between games (I guess you could call that coaching) and I changed my “approach”.

Wound up losing in 5 after being down 2-0.

An hour of squash is estimated to burn between 700 and 1,000 calories, 70 percent more than either tennis or racquetball.

“Because the court’s a lot smaller and the ball doesn’t bounce nearly as much, the game is played at a much faster pace,” Russell said.

Dick Daly

Since 1978, Dick has competed in 24 national championships held in 16 cities throughout the U.S. He has won 16 national titles and been a finalist 8 times. He first won in the Men’s 55+ and subsequently won the Men’s 60+, 65+, 70+, 75+ and 80+. I don’t know of any man who has won national titles in six age groups.

Dick has won five consecutive titles from 1983 through 1988. Over the years, the cities where he has won are Boston, Portland OR, San Francisco, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Houston, Denver, Hartford, and Seattle, (some repeats).

The guy who beat Dick this year was Mike Solin from New York. They played two years ago and Mike got only 3 or 4 points in the whole match. Since then Mike has been playing with an Australian pro in New York and has greatly improved. In the past, Mike had won only about one or two national titles, so this was a big upset. Other factors were that the courts were very dead compared to our courts here and they came up with a new ball, the PRO version that Dick had never played with before. Its characteristics were different from the DOUBLE DOT we trained with. No excuses, they all played with the same ball on the same courts. Dick says he has to work harder next time. There is always next year
